For metric threads, record pitch in millimeters
Example notation is M6 × 1.0.
For Unified inch threads, record TPI
Example notation is 1/4-20.
Confirm with a mating part or chart
The fastener should engage freely by hand for several turns.
Technical decision depth
Thread repair should begin with a material-loss diagnosis. Dirt, corrosion products, cured sealant and small burrs can make a sound thread feel damaged. Light deformation may still leave most of the original flank geometry available. Stripped threads are different: the load-bearing material is gone. Cleaning, chasing, cutting and inserting therefore belong to different stages of the decision tree. A cleaner-looking hole is not automatically a stronger one.
Geometry is just as important as nominal thread size. Check usable depth, wall thickness, whether the hole is blind or through, and whether the repaired fastener must retain its original location. Insert systems preserve nominal internal size by creating a larger preparation thread around it, so the surrounding boss must have enough material for that system. If the hole is already enlarged, eccentric, cracked or close to an edge, standard repair-kit instructions may no longer describe the actual condition. At that point the component—not just the thread—needs to be evaluated.

Use two measurements, not one guess
Fastener identification is most reliable when diameter and pitch are treated as a pair. Diameter narrows the family; pitch or TPI separates fasteners that can look almost identical at a glance. Head width, wrench size, color and country of origin are useful clues but are not substitutes for thread measurements. Clean coatings, dirt and damaged crests enough to obtain a repeatable reading, and measure more than once if the result sits between common sizes.
When two standards appear close, use a known mating nut, bolt or thread checker only as a gentle confirmation tool. Correct machine threads should engage smoothly by hand for several turns. If the part begins to bind almost immediately, stop instead of using a wrench to “prove” the size. A nearly matching metric and inch thread can damage both components before the mismatch becomes obvious.
Record the complete specification
For a machine-thread fastener, record the nominal diameter, pitch or TPI, and the required length. Also note the head/drive style, material and strength or grade requirements when replacement matters. That complete description is far more useful than a measurement such as “13 mm head” or “looks like a quarter inch.” For equipment with a service manual or parts catalog, compare your measurements with the documented specification before ordering or modifying the hole.

Technical decision note: Pitch measurement becomes more reliable when you compare several thread intervals instead of a single crest-to-crest gap. A thread-pitch gauge is the quickest check, but a ruler or caliper can still narrow the possibilities if you measure over multiple pitches and divide correctly. On Unified inch threads, identification is commonly expressed as threads per inch rather than millimeters per pitch, so do not compare the raw numbers as though they use the same convention.
