Stripped Screw Removal
Separate a drive problem from a seizure problem
A stripped recess or rounded head tells you that torque is no longer being transferred reliably. It does not tell you why the fastener will not move. A free-turning screw with a damaged Torx recess needs a different strategy from a corroded screw whose damaged head is only the visible symptom.
Restore grip before removing material
Clean the recess, verify the exact driver size and make sure the bit can seat fully. A damaged Phillips, Torx, hex or slotted drive may still accept a more controlled engagement method before cutting slots, drilling heads or using extractors. Countersunk fasteners deserve particular care because access around the head is limited.
Escalate by damage, not frustration
- Confirm the correct driver and remove debris or paint.
- Increase controlled engagement without hammering an oversized tool blindly into the recess.
- Address corrosion or seizure separately if resistance is abnormal.
- Use cutting, drilling or extraction only when preserving the head is no longer realistic.
Material around the screw matters
Metal, plastic and wood tolerate very different amounts of heat, drilling error and surface damage. The same removal trick can be harmless in a steel bracket and destructive in a plastic housing or finished wood surface.
Use this hub to match the damage
The guides below cover specific drive types, countersunk heads, fully rounded heads, broken-off heads, rounded nuts and bolts, plus method comparisons that help you choose the next escalation step.
